英文绘本共读:The Adventures of Beekle小白的故事

 这本2015年度的凯迪克大奖绘本,讲述了一个关于想象、勇气和友谊的故事。故事的主人公,是一个小孩想象出来的朋友。

打开书,蓝色的扉页上是多组孩子与他们想象中的朋友。

 

Mom: These are children and their imaginary friends. What do you see in the picture? (imaginary 这个词对孩子可能有难度,可以先用中文或英文解释一下:An imaginary friend is a friend you create in your head.)

Kid: Panda, Cat, drum, that’s a nice friend to have.  Octopus, but I don’t like to make friends with Octopus. Cloud, can cloud be a friend? What can you do with cloud? Puzzle, puzzle can be a good friend sometimes.

 

这个小讨论是一个很好的练习自我表达的机会,孩子的回答可长可短,妈妈可以根据孩子的回答及时跟进,比如what can do together with Panda? Do you like to keep a friend at home? Why? 或者回应孩子的问题,比如孩子提到不知道怎么跟云玩,妈妈可以回应 you can take cloud to the ice rink and skate together with her,并就此展开更多的讨论。

 

Mom: What about this one? (pointing to Beekle)

Kid: I don’t know what he looks like. He does not have a friend.

Mom: This story is all about him. Let’s get started.

 

故事前轻松的讨论之后,小白的故事就开始了。

 

故事

讲述

He was born on an island far away where imaginary friend were created. Here, they lived and played, each eagerly waiting to be imagined by a real child. 他出生在一个遥远的小岛,这个小岛是孩子们想象中的朋友诞生之地。想象中的朋友们住在一起,玩在一起,每人都迫切地希望有一个真实的孩子将他们想象出来。

 

这一句里面较难的词有eagerly, 这句话可以简单重述一下:everyone wanted very much (强调very much) to be imagined by a real child.

 

 

               

Every night he stood under the stars, hoping for his turn to be picked by a child and given a special name. 每个晚上他都在星空下站着,盼望有个小朋友想象出他的样子,并且给他取个名字。

 

视孩子理解程度,可以适当简化一下句子:He hoped someone would imagine him and give him a name.

He waited for many nights. 他等了无数个夜晚。

这里可以问一下Prediction (预测)问题:Do you think someone will imagine him?

 

But his turn never came. 但是这个小朋友还是没有出现。

回应一下小朋友刚刚的回答。So you were right. Nobody imagined him.

 

His mind filled with thoughts of all the amazing things that were keeping his friend from imagining him. 至于他的朋友为什么没有想象出他来,他的脑子里充满了各种奇异的想法。

 

这句英文词语简单,但句子复杂一点,可以用英文简述:So he was thinking of all sorts of reasons why his friend did not think of him.

 

So rather than waiting… He did the unimaginable. 所以他不再等待了他做了一件想象不到的事情。

 

这里可以让孩子预测一下You guess what he did?

He sailed through unknown waters and faced many scary things. 他驾船驶过未知的水面,途中面对许许多多可怕的东西。

 

可以让孩子看图说话:What scary things do you see here? Is that a shark?

问孩子小白的感觉:How do you think he will feel?  Do you think he is scared?

 

But thinking about his friend gave him the courage to journey on.,. 但是一想到他的朋友,他就有勇气继续这段航程了。

 

可以简单重述此句:When he thought about his friend, he became brave and continued his journey.

…until he reached the real world.

直到他到达真实的世界。

勇气也是本书的一个重要主题,这里可以评述一下: Well done! He finally made it to the real world. When you have courage, you can do anything.

 

The real world was a strange place. No kids were eating cake. No one stopped to hear the music. And everyone needed naptime.

真实的世界好奇怪啊。没有小孩吃蛋糕,没有人停下来听音乐,每个人坐地铁里面的人都在小睡。

 

讲述这一页之前,让孩子看图说话: How was the real world? What did people do here? 能够自主阅读的孩子也可以让孩子自主朗读。

 

可以根据本页内容跟进提问:Why were there no kids eating cake? Why did no one stop to hear the music? Why did everyone need nap time?

 

一起讨论回答: Because it is not healthy. Because everybody was busy. Because everybody was tired.

 

Then he finally saw something familiar. So he followed.

然后他见到到了自己熟悉的东西。他跟着去了。

 

给孩子提问:What did he saw? Where was he from?

He had a good feeling this place.  But he looked everywhere, and he could not find his friend. 他对这个地方感觉很好。但是他四处观望,也找不到他的朋友。

让孩子看图说话:What is this place? What are people doing here?

 

孩子仔细读图,会看到扉页那些想象的朋友出现在这一页了。对照着看会很有意思。

 

He climbed to the top of the tree and looked out, wishing and hoping his friend would come.

But no one came. 他爬到高高的树上,向外望去,希望他的朋友会来。可是没有人来。

 

可以问孩子:How did he feel? 练习 几个类似感觉的词语:disappointed, sad, upset, left out, unhappy…

 

 

He thought about how far he’d come and how long he’d waited, and felt very sad. Then he heard a noise below.  Hello! 一想到自己走了多远的路,等了多长时间才来到这里, 他就感觉非常难过。接着,他听着下面一个声音传来:喂!

 

让孩子预测一下:Do you think this little girl is going to be his friend?

 

接下来的页面没有文字,可以问孩子:What do you see here? Do you think it is there on the picture?

 

Let’s find out if you are right or not.

 

Her face was friendly and familiar, and there was something about her that felt just right. 她的脸友好而熟悉。她身上有种东西让他感觉很好。

 

跟孩子一起来发现纸上的图画:So it is a picture with him, the little girl and the big tree.  What does this picture mean? 孩子应该不难发现这张图告诉我们小女孩想象出了他,将他画在了纸上。

 

At first, they weren’t sure what to do.

Neither of them had made a friend before.

But…

…After a little while

They realized

They were perfect together.

开始的时候,他们不知道怎么做。两个人都从来没有交过朋友。但是过了一会,他们意识到他们就是一对完美的朋友。

 

这里又是一个很好的看图说话的机会,可以让孩子自主朗读。

 

Finally he got a name, Beekle!

Beekle and Alice had many new adventures. They shared their snacks. They told funny jokes. 他们在一起有了很多新鲜的经历, 他们分享小吃,说着好玩的笑话,

 

可以问孩子: This is what they do together.

What do you do with your friends? 这个问题也可以留到故事讲完以后再进行。

The world began to feel a little less strange. 这个真实的世界没有当初那么奇怪了。

And together they did the unimaginable. 他和爱丽斯一起,做到了不可能做到的事情。

 

小白和爱丽斯以前都是没有朋友的,他们鼓足勇气,找到了自己的朋友,有了不同的美好经历,所见的世界也不一样了。他们付出友谊,也得到了友谊。

 

 

故事讲述完以后,可以进行这些讨论:

 

1.       Have you got an imaginary friend? If you have, can you tell how he looks like? If not, can you create an imaginary friend?

2.       When you want to play with a friend, and you don’t have one, what will you do?

3.       Imagine you go to the park and see some kids playing there, you want to make friends with them and play together, but you don’t know any one of them, what will you do?

4.       What do you usually do with your friends?

5.       Why are friends important to us?

6.       What are some of the things that you have done to your friends? How do you feel about those things?

7.       What are some of the things that your friends have done to you? How do you feel about those things?

8.       Have you encountered any difficulties in life? How did you cope with it?

 

上面这些讨论问题围绕想象、友谊和勇气这三个跟绘本相关的主题,不仅锻炼孩子的表达能力,也能够深化孩子关于友谊和勇气的理解。

 

最后,可以让孩子画一个想象中的朋友,写一段关于这个朋友的小文。

 

英文绘本共读:The <wbr>Adventures <wbr>of <wbr>Beekle小白的故事
 


The Adventures of Beekle, the Unimaginary Friend是知名童书作家Dan Santat的作品。Dan Santat曾经在大学习读微生物专业,但是对艺术的热爱与天分将他带到插画领域,在本书之前Dan在童书界已经颇有声名,并且曾为迪斯尼频道创作过电视系列剧The Replacement, 此次得奖名至实归。

 

Dan Santa在采访中提到,他在自己的孩子出生前,对于儿子长什么样子,喜欢什么东西,第一次见面会是怎样满怀期待,对自己能不能做好一个父亲又充满担心,这个故事其实是对这种期待与担心的一个暗喻,Dan也借这个故事道出了他的儿子第一次上学时,对于在学校如何交朋友的焦虑心情。 Beekle是他的儿子在学说话阶段说bicycle时发出的音,也是他儿子所说的第一个单词。

 

书中这些想象的朋友Dan都经过精心考虑而设计,表现了孩子们的兴趣,如果孩子喜欢放风筝,他的朋友可能是白云,如果孩子喜欢游泳,那他的朋友可能会是锦鲤鱼。Dan最初设计Beekle是想是画成一张白纸,但又觉得这太容易让小读者们猜到Beekle的含意,后来就设计成了现在的团状小人。Beekle和Alice的初次见面,Dan想表现的是孩子们在游乐场等社交场合初次见面的不安与尴尬,以及如何找到共同点,联接友谊的纽带。 Dan将书中Beekle被取名的那一刻,跟他自己与儿子出生后初次见面,并给他取名,赋予同样的内涵。故事的色调也随着情节从沉郁的黑色、深绿逐渐转为温暖明亮的黄色、橙色,象征着友谊给人生带来的亮度。

 

国内最近出版了彭懿和杨玲玲翻译的中文版,《小白的故事》是中文译本的名称。我在翻译上偏好直译,不喜欢译者添加自己的意愿进去,不过小白这个名字,倒也不错,很符合中文语境的小朋友名字,书中小白的特点就是全身白色,所以也很好地体现了这个主角的特征。希望有一天也读到这本中文的译作。
